The Kings Point Offshore team competed in the McMillan Cup which was held at the United States Naval Academy. After a light wind practice on Friday, Oct 20, the team was feeling strong and confident going into the first day. On Saturday, there were no races held due to lack of wind. On Sunday, the boats sat at postponement for a few hours until the wind finally filled in from the south south-east direction. The breeze was oscillating quite a bit back and fourth, and the Kings Point team used that to their advantage.
In the first race, the KP boat started around in the middle of the line in clean air. They rounded the windward mark in first, but Navy was able to pass them on the downwind leg due to light air and covering. With the wind at 2 knots, the KP boat was able to drift across the line to get second place. After the one race, the wind completely shut off and racing was called for the rest of the day.
Finishing in 2nd place in the regatta, the Kings Point Offshore team qualified for the Kennedy Cup, held on Nov. 4-5 at the Naval Academy. Unfortunately, the winds and seas were not in their favor for the Kennedy Cup. With light and shifty winds, the team did not perform as well. In tough conditions in both regattas, the USMMA Offshore Team had a great showing. Way to Go!
